- Company had announced a top-down reorganization around ops
- As part of this, company spun up ML-SRE
- SRE was going to be responsible, against their will, for all L1 on-call 24/7
- So they put out an ultimatim that they would only support systems that were built around their preferred stack
- One place this made sense was Model Serving
- Model Serving had the lion’s share of pages, mostly from the services that ML-SRE was going to be supporting
- The stack for MS was totally different, but not in any of the services that actually needed L1 support
- A dispute broke out on Slack while my manager was on vacation, and he had delegated to me, so I stepped in and arranged a meeting
- It quickly became clear that everyone was speaking different languages
- When the new ML-SRE team came to understand that the requirements were unnecessary for supporting MS, they immediately changed their plans
