In quantization, levels refer to the labels to which continuous values will be mapped. The correspondence of these levels to their underlying ranges is called the codebook. Note that the term “codebook” is primarily associated with vector quantization (where the codebook typically maps levels to centroids); however, it can be applicable to certain scalar procedures. For example, when using quantile discretization, the codebook maps level indices to equal-sized quantile ranges.
